Where it started

The Challenge

Schoolchildren in Uzbekistan had almost no accessible way to start programming. What existed was too advanced, English-only or paywalled, and reading about code is a poor substitute for writing it. We wanted free, structured lessons in web programming, where students write real code from the first exercise and find out immediately whether it works.

What we did

The Solution

We built Codium as a Laravel platform with a four-level curriculum of languages, chapters, lessons and exercises. CodeMirror gives students a real code editor in the browser, and each submission is checked in real time against regex rules defined for that exercise. The course framework let us add new languages and exercise types as content, without changing core logic.

How It Came Together

Free interactive programming lessons for schoolchildren in Uzbekistan

Codium was our own product: an interactive coding platform that taught schoolchildren web programming for free. It didn't assume fluent English or any prior experience, and it kept students writing code instead of just reading about it. We built the MVP over six months, starting in September 2019.

Key features

  • Structured curriculum: content is organized as languages → chapters → lessons → exercises, so courses can grow without restructuring.
  • In-browser code editor: a CodeMirror editor is built into every exercise, so students work in a real code editor with nothing to install.
  • Instant feedback: each submission is validated in real time, so students know right away whether the exercise passes.
  • Extensible course framework: new languages and exercise types plug in without rewriting the platform.
  • Free for students: nothing stands between a student and the first lesson.

How the interactive lessons work

The backend is a Laravel application with MySQL holding the curriculum. Each exercise carries its own validation rules written as regular expressions. When a student submits code, it's checked against those patterns and the result comes back immediately.

Regex checks suited an MVP. They're fast, simple to write for each exercise and predictable for beginner tasks, where the goal is to confirm a student wrote the expected structure. Because the rules belong to each exercise rather than to core code, adding a lesson meant adding content, not shipping a new release.

Why the project was suspended

The technology worked, but adoption didn't. We pursued state adoption so schools could use Codium, but institutional interest was low, and we suspended the project. Still, the MVP showed that free, interactive coding lessons built for local schoolchildren are practical to build, and that experience informs our education work today.

Our current education product is BiliMind, an AI course generator that also runs as a Telegram Mini App. We build learning platforms like these as part of our web app development service.
