What these families need
Parents of children with developmental or learning differences have usually been through several institutions that could not accommodate their child. They need specific information: which needs you work with, what specialists are on the team, what an individual programme looks like, group sizes, and what the assessment involves. Vague language about an individual approach reads as another place that will say no after taking the money for an assessment.
What we build for a special education centre
First, programmes by specific need with the specialists involved, stated plainly so families can self-select instead of hoping. Second, the assessment process described with cost and what it produces. Third, accessibility of the site itself built to standard, since some of these families have access needs too. Fourth, parent support and progress reporting, because families in this position need to be partners rather than customers, and that is also what sustains a long programme.
