Where utility call centres drown
Three routine tasks consume almost all of a utility's customer contact: submitting meter readings, reporting a fault, and asking what is owed. All three are mechanical, all three currently run through a phone line, and for two weeks every month a small team does nothing but retype numbers. Residents get no confirmation that anything was recorded, cannot see the status of a reported fault, and discover their balance only when a paper notice arrives.
What we build for a utility
First, online meter submission with validation, which removes the monthly retyping and rejects impossible readings at the point of entry. Second, trackable service requests, so a resident can see that a fault was logged and where it stands. Third, a resident portal with balance, history and online payment, which cuts both arrears and enquiries. Fourth, outage notices by street and address with subscriptions, so the call centre stops absorbing confusion it did not cause.
