Where subscription revenue leaks
A subscription business lives on retention: acquisition cost is recovered over several months, so a customer who cancels in month two is a loss. Cancellations come from failed payments nobody retried, from a box arriving when the customer is away, from an inability to skip a month, and from the feeling of having no control. All four are product problems rather than marketing problems.
What we build for a subscription box
First, recurring billing with intelligent retry on failed payments, since involuntary churn is a large share of cancellation and is entirely recoverable. Second, skip, pause and delivery rescheduling in the account, because a customer who cannot skip cancels instead. Third, plan changes and preference management, which converts a would-be cancellation into a smaller plan. Fourth, churn signals surfaced before cancellation, plus a proper win-back flow, since reactivating a lapsed subscriber costs far less than finding a new one.
